Checklist before coming to the CLS
- Do I have my samples?
- Users who want to do experiments at the CLS must complete the online training and a beamline safety orientation (BSO) every two years. The online training is needed for getting your access card and should be completed prior to coming.
- Is everyone coming to the CLS listed on your permit? The spokesperson of the beamtime proposal can add people to the experiment permit through the user portal. The person to be added needs to register as a user through the user portal first.
Checklist before leaving CLS
- Remove any/all samples from the beamline. It is a CLS requirement for the users to make sure there are no samples left behind after the beamtime. Staff are not responsible for samples that are left behind, unless prior arrangements have been made directly with the beamline staff.
OPUS software problems and fixes
OPUS tends to freeze, lose communication with the spectrometer and/or the microscope and act strangely. To resolve these problems we provide a list of known issues and their solutions.
- Problem: There is no video image in the Video Assisted Measurement window
Solution: Exit and reopen the video-assisted measurement window (this may require several attempts) - Problem: The microscope stage does not move
Solution: Go to the XY stage menu (double check) and activate the stage. NOTE: if there are negative numbers in the stage position markers, you need to calibrate the stage (link needed). - Problem: The “Check Signal” is a flat line.
Cause: Common cause is that the ‘scope is set to “view” of “visible” mode.
Solution:Hit the IR switch on the control panel to get it to IR Signal mode. Sometimes this has to be changed back and forth a couple times to get the mirrors to move into correct position. Somtimes the mode Transmission/Reflection gets changed so check that.
In general, if you experience problems the procedure below can be used to resolve ~70% of all issues:
- Restart OPUS
- Restart the computer – NOTE: after restarting the measurement computer, you need to recalibrate the microscope stage! (link needed)
- Restart the whole system following this procedure (link needed)
General User Questions
-
How do I access my data?
- A PDF guide is available here – CLS FTP Data Access.
-
How do I log-on to the computers?
- Most computers: the user name is based on your experiment/permit number (xx-xxxx) and you will log-on to the EX domain (ex\xx-xxxx). Example: for permit number 12-3456, when logging on, the username would be “EX\12-3456″
- FPA computer: there is only one main user account. Ask beamline staff for access details to this computer.
-
How do I access the network?
- There are two hard-wired Ethernet lines in the outer hutch (one is located by the phone). Simply plug-in an Ethernet cable to gain access.
- Alternatively, you can use the wireless network. To access the wireless network, access details are found on signs labelled “Guest Wireless Access” (also by the phone in the outer hutch).
-
How do I print?
- The Dell colour laser printer (outer hutch) should be configured and set as the default printer on every beamline computer. A Logon Script is employed to ensure this.
